“Whatever its legal status, prostitution causes great harm to women.

►In the Netherlands, where prostitution is legal, 60% of prostituted women suffered physical assaults; 70% experienced verbal threats of physical assault; 40% experienced sexual violence; and 40% had been forced into prostitution or sexual abuse by acquaintances.

►In Germany where brothel prostitution is legal, 59% of German women told researchers that they did not think that legal prostitution made them any safer from rape and physical assault.

►Of 845 people in prostitution in nine countries (Canada, Colombia, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, United States, and Zambia), 71% experienced physical assaults in prostitution and 62% reported rapes in prostitution. 89% percent told researchers that they wanted to leave prostitution but did not have other options for economic survival.”

We are creating alternative forms of media that encourage individuals and communities to think more critically about the buying and selling of women’s bodies; the commodification of sex and sexuality; impacts on individuals and groups of people; and alternative visions of sex and sexuality free of power abuse, violence, and hierarchy.

The Not For Sale Media Project is currently embarking on the creation of posters that raise awareness on issues of prostitution, pornography, and trafficking. The posters are 8.5″ x 14″ or 11″ x 17″ in size and are being utilized for public and community education. View some of the posters below. Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer courts controversy by saying that porn sites can STAY after $1.1b purchase of Tumblr

CEO Marissa Mayer has no plans to clean up the “rich” non “brand-safe content” (aka PORN) at Tumblr, after Yahoo’s purchase of the blogging platform.

This is very disappointing! Mayer had the chance to do the right thing and to chose profit over caring about humanity. SAD. This is why our society is going downhill in so many ways…

[Daily Mail] — Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer said that the company does not ‘intend’ to take down any of the porn-heavy sites that are run on Tumblr after the tech giant acquired the blogging platform for $1.1billion.

The sale created a great deal of uproar from Tumblr purists who fear that Yahoo’s involvement will dramatically alter the platform that they know and love, but Mayer has done her best to tone down those concerns.

Asked whether she was planning to address the X-rated sites hosted on Tumblr- like ‘Red Hot Porn’, ‘Secretary Sex’ and ‘Porn and Weed’- since they are less ‘brand safe’ she said no.

‘I think the richness and breadth of content available on Tumblr – even though it may not be as brand safe as what’s on our site – is what’s really exciting and allows us to reach even more users,’ she said on Monday.

‘One of the ways to start measuring our growth story here is around traffic and users, and this obviously produces a lot of that.

‘In terms of how to address advertisers’ concerns around brand safety, we need to have good tools for targeting.’

During a conference call, Mayer alluded to another tech giant by quoting a line from the film The Social Network which was a narrative account of the founding of Facebook.

‘It’s like the line from The Social Network movie: “Why would you monetize it? You don’t even know what ‘it’ is yet,”‘ she told investors.

‘In terms of the integration between the two sites, we plan to operate and brand and grow Tumblr separately from Yahoo.

FBI pornography investigation turns up photo of an apparently dead (and probably raped) infant in bondage with a noose around her neck

Here’s a horrific story about a young man with a huge child pornography collection, including some porn of a raped INFANT with a bag over her head, a nose around her neck, and a degrading tattoo on her indicating that she had been raped!

This is a harsh reminder of why everyone needs to do your part to help with the cause. Donate, volunteer, do your own activism, whatever. Please just do SOMETHING to take a strong stand against these atrocities against humanity. (Mostly innocent women and children.) Thanks!

[Examiner] — A criminal complaint was filed Wednesday in Detroit federal court involving child pornography. An Adrian man was allegedly found in possession of more than 1,000 child porn images, including a photo of what appeared to be a dead infant with a noose around her neck, a bag over her head and a tattoo that said “nepi-rape, which authorities said translates into “the rape of the innocence.”

The suspect, Sean Gossman, is due in U.S. District Court today for an appearance on charges of receipt and possession of child pornography.

According to the criminal complaint filed Wednesday in federal court, the FBI was alerted to Gossman after a child found a thumb-drive on the ground last November while in Onsted Village Park in Onsted, in Lenawee County. A family member of the child turned the thumb drive over to the Cambridge Township Police, who found child pornographic pictures on it, along with photos of the suspect, the complaint said.

While conducting a computer forensic exam of the thumb drive, the FBI found 1,039 images of child pornography on it, including 28 images depicting bondage or torture, 10 movies, one movie involving bestiality, and 536 images of child erotica, the complaint said.

On April 5 the FBI obtained a search warrant and searched Gossman’s trailer with him present. Agents seized two laptops, several CD/DVDs and three thumb drives.

According to the complaint, Gossman-after being read his rights-indicated that all of the thumb drives were his, and admitted that he downloaded child erotica, then moved on to child pornographic images, and recently started downloading child porn movies.

LEARNING THE TRUTH ABOUT THE HARMS OF PORNOGRAPHY SET ME FREE FROM MY ADDICTION

Thanks for all you’re doing to fight off the porn industry. It’s absolutely amazing how blind we can be to the effects of pornography until our lives become damaged. I allowed myself to continue drifting into my porn addiction up until recently. I always figured I’d eventually “grow out” of it. I would set New Year’s resolutions year after year, thinking I could just indulge until that date and stop for good. I have been living a double life for over 20 years.

I married, got divorced, and have three girls. Ironically my wife got me started into my pornography addiction. For my 20th Birthday she bought me a one-year subscription to Playboy. She thought if I read the magazine it would help our sex life. But all it did was make me resent my wife for not looking like the Playboy models. Our sex life was boring and I eventually found more pleasure in masturbating to the Playboy photos. I found pornography to be a convenience because it was all about my own satisfaction rather than having to worry about pleasing my wife. We divorced after eight years of marriage because we were both just bored with each other.

So I started buying more hardcore magazines. Playboy wouldn’t do it for me any more. I remained hooked because of the lie that there will always be something better around the corner. Just check out one more website or just check out this one last porn star. There was always something new to be curious about.

I have always known that pornography is wrong. But my problem has been not having an understanding of WHY it is wrong. Somewhere in my mind I could reason that since I’m not the one committing the acts on the set nor did I set the stage or hire the performers, somehow it was okay. My addiction progressed to me hiring prostitutes and having sex in oriental spas. I just craved sex any way I could get it.

The one thing that broke this cycle was when I began surfing through anti-porn sites, starting with your AntiPornographyBlog channel on YouTube that featured Sasha Grey’s interview with Tyra Banks. Discovering what it’s really like to be a porn star got me to the point where I don’t care to re-enact their experience anymore.

Part of my addiction was my envy of porn stars. I envied them because I thought they were really living it up, making all kinds of money while enjoying nonstop sex. By visiting anti-porn sites I could see that they actually live a miserable life. I didn’t know that so many of them have died of suicide, overdoses, murder, and AIDS. I also didn’t realize how many are abused and underpaid.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was affecting my personal life as well. Every time I’d come home to my family I couldn’t wait to get back on the road so I could indulge in porn again. I have also been lying about my finances because I couldn’t admit I was spending money on my addiction.

So here I am, taking it one day at a time. I don’t view pornography anymore. To occupy my time I read through anti-porn sites and I find more time to exercise. I could go to a porn site right now, but I choose not to. Again, thanks for helping me open my eyes to the truth about pornography.

WATCH this powerful TED Talk video about sexual objectification, how harmful it is and what can be done about it.

It’s an excellent analysis, but strangely seems to omit the elephant in the room — the most powerful sexually objectifying form of media in existence — PORNOGRAPHY! Oh well, hopefully the viewers of it will understand that when the speaker is referring to “sexually objectifying media,” that PORN is included in this category, and not just images from advertising!

This summer, Wheelock College, together with Stop Porn Culture, is offering a Media Institute, an anti-pornography training, and a one-day feminist teach-in. Below are details and a link to registration. You can register for any or all of the events. Scholarships are available for low income people.

Event 1 – July 9 – 12

Media Institute:

Media Madness: The Impact of Sex, Violence and Commercial Culture on Children, Adults and Society

Faculty: Dr. Gail Dines and Dr. Diane Levin

Some of the topics we cover:

* How media violence affects behavior and contributes to violence in society

* Growing up with Beyonce, Katy, Kim, Lindsay, Rihanna and so on …

* How media images perpetuate and legitimize sexism, racism, consumerism and economic inequality

* The role of hypersexualization and pornography in perpetuating sexism and violence against women and children

* How media affects children’s ideas, learning, behavior and relationships

* How to critically deconstruct media images and develop media literacy skills

* How to become active in advocacy, community building, and grass roots organizing

* How to work with children, families, schools, and the wider society to counteract the harm being caused

Stop Porn Culture Anti-Pornography Activist Training

Trainers: SPC Board

Running concurrently with the second half of the media institute is a training that provides participants with the experience, knowledge, and confidence to talk publicly against pornography in their communities. The training will include in-depth presentations on:

· How porn shapes our attitudes, identities, behaviors and sexuality

· Background on the economics of this global industry

· First Amendment and other free speech issues

· Women in the industry

· Racism in porn

· The question of “alternative” images

· How to organize in your community

We will also have a long session of practicing Q&As in small groups. The training will end with a session on self-care for presenters and activists, since this work can be grueling.

Feminist Teach-In

Facilitators: SPC board and members

This feminist teach-in will provide participants with an opportunity to participate in in-depth discussions with leading feminist activists/academics from across the country, and also in small group discussions, to explore issues such as:

* History of debates within feminist thinking and activism

* The porning of women’s and men’s sexuality

* The sexual politics of hook-up culture

* The history of race and racism in feminism

* Men in feminism

* Stopping prostitution and trafficking

* Capitalism, patriarchy and environmental justice

* Feminist blogging/writing as resistance

. . . AND: how to become a joyful, energized and effective feminist activist!

HOW OUR “SEX SOCIETY” FOR MEN MAKES ME HAVE SERIOUS ISSUES

Hey everyone. I’ve been working in an erotic store for about three years now and I must admit it is simply disgusting to see what kind of pornos men pick. (The name of the store is Erdbeermund, in case anyone is interested or lives in Germany.) The oldest men pick the teen movies, the younger the female performers the better, and the more brutal the sex acts the better. We have DVDs about men sewing up women’s vaginas and everything else you can imagine.

Working in this place has really made my image of men worse. Every second DVD customer wants us to throw away the DVD cover. Why? Because he has to hide what he is watching from his wife, girlfriend, or whoever. Sometimes we have customers asking for help to pick a nice sex toy to surprise their wife, and as soon as the customer steps up to the register he asks screwed up questions like: “Where is there a whorehouse or a strip club?” Or he even changes his mind on surprising his wife and ends up buying some DVD with men peeing on women.

We have porn addicted customers calling us all stirred up because they’re waiting for a new DVD that was supposed to come out. These people spend hundreds of euros on some stupid DVDs! They collect this stuff. This is sick! One of them lost his wife and has a lot of debt because of this!

As for me, I broke up with my fiancé because he was (I believe) a porn addict. He came to visit me from the US for two weeks and had nothing better to do than get up and watch porn while I was still sleeping. All he had eyes for was girls and more girls. He loved strip clubs and everything that had to do with this theme. This screwed up my love and respect for this man and he disgusted me. Plus he had double moral standards big time: For instance, he loved all these things but his own woman isn’t allowed to even take sexy pictures, and gay men should be killed but lesbians are hot. Since being with this man I feel like throwing up just thinking of men liking lesbians, men watching porn, or men going to strip clubs or whatever.

This man hurt me so much that now I truly have an issue just with seeing naked women everywhere. I got to the point that I started crying when I was watching TV or if I saw a commercial for the sex hot-lines or just some movie with women taking off their bras, whether it fits in the movie or not. And this is also the reason why I stopped modeling. It is because I see all of this differently now. I could have been big in hip-hop videos but I chose not to — because it’s just the same as pornography, just not to the same degree.

I want to escape from this but I can’t. I have a new boyfriend now and all of these issues I brought from my old relationship have really caused some issues already in my new one. I am simply disgusted by men. My boyfriend, who is a sweetheart, once told me that he has always dreamed of a threesome with two women, which is actually nothing really bad. But I’m so mad and disgusted just because of these things that I had to go through with my ex. I even thought about going to a psychologist.

All in all these things make me go crazy and this “sex society” that is made for men pisses me off big time. I cannot even go to a damn regular club without being forced to see female strippers hopping around in front of my boyfriend’s nose, and everyone always expects me to accept it: “Men are like this,” “It’s in their genes,” “You have to accept it,” Blah, blah, blah… Get out of my face with this!

Anyway, I am so glad that I’m not the only one with these kinds of issues. Most people don’t understand it. I love your site and I will try to spread it to anyone who seems open to it. Much respect to you and the anti-porn side! We need more like you!
