“The Failed Prostitution Experiment” – by Equality Now

PLEASE READ this GREAT article by Lauren Hersh of Equality Now (@EqualityNow) on why prostitution legalization is a FAILED experiment! It responds to all the people who claim that all problems with prostitution would be easily solved by legalizing it. This is completely false! Read on for details as to why…

[Huffington Post] — My friend Rachel Moran describes in her book, Paid For, how she was taken into state custody at 14 and within a year, was homeless, hungry and vulnerable. Her lack of choice fed her into the belly of prostitution. For the next seven years, she lived through repeated rapes from buyers and relentless violence. But physical harm and exploitation were not all she endured.

For Rachel and countless survivors worldwide, societal stigma is a concept that they have faced all too often. It arises because society dehumanizes people in prostitution, treating them as second class citizens at best. Stigma prevents prostituted people from accessing adequate health care and places them at higher risk of violence by abusers who often act with impunity.

To some, the solution is simple — legalize the commercial sex industry and stigma will vanish.

But experts, government reports and academic publications are increasingly confirming what survivors have been saying for a long time — that the legalization or decriminalization of the commercial sex industry does not reduce stigma, does not eliminate violence and fails to make things safer for people in prostitution.

Porn group lifts moratorium on filming but orders extra HIV/STD tests

The porn industry is going back to work after the HIV outbreak, increasing testing, but still rejecting condoms. And sadly AB 640 — the California Bill which would have helped to enforce condom laws in the whole state — was also shot down last week. Details below…

[LA Times] — An adult film industry trade group announced that shooting can begin again Friday after a two-week moratorium prompted by HIV cases in the industry.

The industry also said it would revise its sexually transmitted disease testing protocols to require performers to test every 14 days rather than every 28, as was previously required. Performers will be required to test again on or after Thursday to be cleared for work.

Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult film industry, called a weeklong filming moratorium last month after a 28-year-old actress who goes by the screen name Cameron Bay tested positive for HIV.

Shortly after that moratorium was lifted, Rod Daily, another adult actor who is Bay’s real-life boyfriend, announced on Twitter that he too had tested positive.

The industry coalition initially said that it had not been officially notified of those test results and did not immediately call another moratorium. Days later, the coalition announced that a third performer — who has not been publicly identified — had also tested positive.

The group said all of the performers’ on-screen partners had tested negative and maintained that none of them contracted the infection on set.

Critics of the industry said the incident still shows that producers are not doing enough to protect performers by requiring them to wear condoms.

“Whether or not [Bay] was infected on set, she performed with HIV between her tests,” AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein said last week. “If you think that Russian roulette is a great way to protect workers, then the present system is perfect.”

Free Speech Coalition Chief Executive Diane Duke contended that the testing protocols have worked to prevent transmissions on set.

“It’s disappointing when scare tactics are used,” she said.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation backed a Los Angeles County measure passed by voters last year to require that actors wear condoms during shoots and also backed a state bill that would have done the same.

That bill, written by Isadore Hall (D-Compton), died last week after it was held up in the state Senate’s Rules Committee as being too similar to another bill that had previously been held in the Assembly.

P.S. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation held a press conference today with five ex porn performers who are HIV positive. More on this tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s a good brief story and video from the press conference in which HIV positive actress Cameron Bay describes how shooting continued on a Kink(dot)com BDSM set after her male partner was cut and bleeding!

ANTI-PORN UK PROTEST, SUNDAY SEPT 22: Join London Feminist Network in saying NO to Radisson’s XBIZ porn conference!

Check out the details of the upcoming anti-porn event of London Feminist Network (@antiporn_lfn) below! Please share and attend if you can!

——————–

PORNOGRAPHY IS TOXIC!

Join London Feminist Network for a protest against the porn industry, outside the Radisson Bloomsbury Hotel.

All women welcome to join us. Please note this is a women only protest.

XBIZ EU, a four-day pornography industry conference, will take place at the Radisson Bloomsbury Hotel from September 22-25. Here, representatives will network and discuss ways of spreading their toxic pornographic content onto more accessible devices.

Pornography degrades women. It puts women involved in the making of it at high risk of physical and psychological damage . It gives the men who watch it a harmful view of women and relationships. It can encourage male violence against women .

In short, it is toxic. This is why women from the London Feminist Network will protest at 4 pm on Sunday, September 22 at the Radisson Bloomsbury. We protest against the damage pornography does to women and question how a major hotel can play host to this poisonous industry that uses women’s bodies to make vast amounts of money.

Please like, share, and don’t forget to attend if you are in the UK! Thanks!

EXCLUSIVE: HIV+ Porn Star Cameron Bay Recounts Disturbing Experiences On Set While Shooting Porn

READ this article in which newly HIV infected porn performer Cameron Bay shares the disturbing reality of porn. She describes the horrific abuses, injuries and illnesses a female performer is expected to endure as part of their “job” of providing depraved misogynistic masturbation material to sadistic uncaring men.

Cameron also supports condoms in porn! Check out the details below.

[Huffington Post] — Owning nothing but a backpack full of clothes, Cameron Bay started working as an escort a year ago, hoping to rebuild her life. A few months ago, she performed in her first-ever porn scene — an orgy with 10 people. After just nine more scenes, she discovered she has HIV. Nobody’s sure where or when she contracted it.

During her scenes, none of the male performers she had sex with ever used a condom, she said. One female performer told her, “Don’t even bring it up because they have somebody waiting to replace you.”

“I learned that there’s always someone younger and sexier, willing to do something you’re not. It’s a dog-eat-dog world,” Bay said in an exclusive interview with The Huffington Post. “I think we need more choices because of that. Condoms should be a choice.”

Last November, LA voters passed a measure mandating condom use in porn, despite a large, coordinated campaign against it by the porn industry. But since then, industry insiders say there has been no enforcement of the new law.

After having sex with five men in her first porn scene, Bay got a kidney infection and was sick for weeks (photo). She shot all but one of her scenes in LA for Hustler, Zero Tolerance and 21st Sextury. The only scene not shot in LA was her last scene, shot on July 31 for Kink[dot]com in San Francisco, where the company is based. It’s also the only time she shot BDSM (Bondage, Domination, Sadism and Masochism) and anal sex.

Bay was told that condoms were optional on that final shoot. She told people on set that she would leave the choice up to her male scene partner. Bay said to HuffPost she didn’t think she needed to ask for a condom because her male co-star had a negative STD test. Kink[dot]om confirmed to HuffPost that Bay was offered a condom but it was not used.

During the scene, a male extra hit Bay too hard on set and badly injured her left-breast tissue. Kink[dot]com paid for her hospital visit through workers compensation, and her doctor ordered her not to work for two weeks so that her breast could recover, Bay said. The surgery she needs on her breast, which is artificially enlarged, has now been postponed — possibly permanently — because she has HIV.

Kink[dot]com confirmed to HuffPost that performers’ injuries on set are covered by workers compensation but the company’s HR department was not available for comment on Bay’s injury.

In the same shoot, there was a separate incident when “really, really bad stuff” happened on set, Bay said. “Let’s just say there was an incident, and we should have stopped shooting,” she said, declining to give more details. “Very poor decisions by a few of us.”

“I was new to the industry. When I was told that I was safe to shoot, I was like, ‘OK, cool,’” she said. “I had no idea. I really didn’t understand.”

Switzerland ups legal prostitution age from 16 to 18 years old to align with rest of European Union

YAY! Some GOOD NEWS for a change! Switzerland just raised the legal age of doing prostitution and pornography from 16 to 18! Of course we don’t think that anyone of ANY age should be doing porn or being prostituted, but at least this is a step in the right direction! Every bit helps, and hopefully this will help prevent many teen girls in Switzerland from doing porn or prostitution at the ages of 16 or 17!

GENEVA (AFP) – The Swiss parliament voted Tuesday to raise the legal prostitution age from 16 to 18, tightening the country’s liberal sex-trade laws to bring them in line with European standards.

The lower house of parliament voted to change the Swiss penal code to make it illegal to pay for sex with a minor, following suit after the upper house adopted the bill.

Until now, paying for sex with people above 16 — the legal age of consent in Switzerland — was legal in the small Alpine country.

With the law change, prostitutes between the ages of 16 and 18 will not face penalties, but clients who pay for sex with minors will face up to three years behind bars.

Anyone encouraging prostitution by minors, including pimps, and people running brothels or escort services, will face up to 10 years in prison.

The law change also raises the legal age to participate in pornography, making it a crime punishable by up to five years in jail to produce, import, promote, screen or possess pornography featuring minors.

NEW STUDY: Does Deviant Pornography Use Follow A Guttman-Like Progression? (Less to more deviant)

Here’s an interesting new study examining whether regular adult porn use causes a progression to more deviant porn such as child porn or bestiality. Check out the study abstract and the conclusion below!

BRIEF SUMMARY:

1) The younger a person is when they first intentionally access porn, the more likely they are to end up using more deviant pornography such as child pornography and bestiality.

2) “Desensitization may put an individual at risk for progression from nondeviant to deviant pornography behaviors.”

STUDY: Does Deviant Pornography Use Follow A Guttman-Like Progression?

Published in the peer-reviewed journal Computers in Human Behavior 29 (2013)

ABSTRACT:

This study investigated whether deviant pornography use followed a Guttman-like progression in that a person transitions from being a nondeviant to deviant pornography user. In order to observe this progression, 630 respondents from Survey Sampling International’s (SSI) panel Internet sample completed an online survey assessing adult-only, bestiality, and child pornography consumption. Respondents’ “age of onset” for adult pornography use was measured to determine if desensitization occurred in that individuals who engaged in adult pornography at a younger age were more likely to transition into deviant pornography use. Two hundred and fifty-four respondents reported the use of nondeviant adult pornography, 54 reported using animal pornography, and 33 reported using child pornography. The child pornography users were more likely to consume both adult and animal pornography, rather than just solely consuming child pornography. Results suggested deviant pornography use followed a Guttman-like progression in that individuals with a younger “age of onset” for adult pornography use were more likely to engage in deviant pornography (bestiality or child) compared to those with a later “age of onset.” Limitations and future research suggestions are discussed.

———-

5. CONCLUSION

There is a debate in the literature regarding the effects of unwanted exposure to pornography by young children; however, few studies assess the age of intentional use of nondeviant and deviant pornography. Despite attempts of monitoring, filtering, or deleting images or websites on the Internet, nondeviant and deviant of pornography will continue to be accessible, affordable, and anonymous (c.f., Seigfried-Spellar, Bertoline, & Rogers, 2012). Growth in the number of deviant pornography users (i.e., child pornography) will only increase as the current 2.45 billion of the world’s population (35%) with Internet access continues to increase (ITU, 2011). This growth will only add importance to understanding “why” some people view, download and exchange deviant pornography when others do not. This exploratory study suggests “age of onset” for nondeviant pornography use is related to later deviant pornography use. In addition, women are engaging in child pornography, but men are still more likely to be consumers of child pornography. As suggested by Quayle and Taylor (2003), desensitization may put an individual at risk for progression from nondeviant to deviant pornography behaviors. Future research should assess whether individual differences (e.g., openness to experience, consciousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism; see Seigfried-Spellar & Rogers, 2013) are related to this Guttman-like progression for deviant (i.e., child) pornography use.

“Shocker! FOURTH Porn Actor Confirms Positive Test For HIV… As Fears Of An Epidemic Grow” (Via Radar Online)

A FOURTH porn performer has tested positive for HIV! Where will it end and when will the porn industry ever learn?

[Radar Online] — Another porn star has revealed he has tested positive for HIV, the fourth such case reported in less than three weeks, RadarOnline[dot]com has exclusively learned.

The male actor confirmed his diagnosis to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the largest nonprofit global HIV/AIDS organization in the world which is presently fighting for a statewide condom rule in California.

“I can confirm,” the organization’s president Michael Weinstein told Radar. “However, he has asked that all other information be kept strictly confidential at this time.”

When pressed on the circumstances of the latest infection, Weinstein refused to elaborate further: “I have nothing else to say about the performer.”

The organization would not release details on the porn performer, including any adult film company that employed him.

It’s the latest blow to the multibillion dollar adult industry, which could be shut down indefinitely in the wake of the health crisis.

“Porn Biz Shut Down Again Over Yet Another HIV Case” (The third time in one month!)

Tragically a third pornography performer has tested positive for HIV and the porn industry is once again shutting down. The performer is said to be female, but as of this posting no more details of their identity are confirmed. Hopefully this sad situation will encourage the California legislature to approve AB 640 to stop the porn industry from continually trying to avoid complying with basic health and safety standards. More info on the overall situation is below:

[L.A. Weekly] — The porn industry was being asked to shut down production again after another performer has tested positive for HIV.

The adult video trade group known as Free Speech Coalition today asked for a voluntary “moratorium on all production until further notice.” An official at the L.A.-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation told the Weekly that the organization believes this is the third case of HIV to hit the industry in the last few weeks:

The official said the latest performer to come up positive might be connected to a July 31 shoot for kink[dot]com called “Public Disgrace” in which patient zero Cameron Bay performed. [Added at 7:25 p.m: This doesn't appear to be the case. See more in an update below].

A man reported to be her boyfriend, Rod Daily, outed himself on Twitter as the second performer to come up positive. He has worked in both gay and straight porn.

The Free Speech Coalition, through its Performer Availability Screening Services arm, says that more details on the latest positive will be released later.

It states simply that “another performer has tested positive for HIV.”

It’s the second industry shut down since Aug. 21, when Bay’s status set off what might now be described as an outbreak.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has expressed outrage over the situation, given that the industry is under an L.A. county law mandating condom use on-set. Even if the latest positive is connected to a Bay Area shoot, California workplace safety authorities have said that condoms are the rule statewide, too.

They just don’t have the resources to enforce the regulation.

AHF filed a complaint with state authorities last month over the kink[dot]com shoot that involved multiple performers in a scene: The group says condoms were not used.

“Women in the Porn, Sex and Webcam Industry: How are They Doing?” – By Dr. Linda Hatch

Here’s a revealing article on how sadly damaged the women in pornography are.

EXCERPT:

How are the women in the online porn industry faring?

I came across some interesting data through an organization operated by former porn and sex industry workers. They report on the results of “a cross sectional study based on the California Women’s Health Survey” which compared the mental health of female adult performers with that of other young women in California.

As children:

37% women in porn had been child victims of forced sex compared to 13% of women not in porn

21% had been placed in foster care compared to 4% of women not in porn

As adults:

33% of women in porn met the criteria for depression vs. 13% of women not in porn

34% of women in porn experienced domestic violence in the past 12 months vs. 6% of women not in porn

27% of women in porn experienced forced sex as adults compared to 9% of women not in porn

50% of women in porn lived in poverty in the past 12 months vs. 36% of women not in porn.

“Linda Lovelace: Inside the life of the ‘Deep Throat’ star” (CNN)

Here’s an article on Linda Lovelace in which pornographer Larry Flynt says that Linda was forced by her husband to do porn. Very sad but true!

[CNN] — The film actually presents its audience with two versions of the Lovelace story. For most of the film, she is shown as being manipulated into porn by her then-husband, Chuck Traynor. But in an darker version of events shown toward the film’s end from Lovelace’s point of view, she is depicted as essentially a sex slave.

Neither scenario is a happy one. Flynt, who says he knew Lovelace and Traynor, seems to believe the darker version.

“She was just being used every step of the way,” he told CNN. “It wasn’t something where she’d wake up every morning and think, ‘I can’t wait to get to work in the morning.’ That wasn’t the situation.”

Flynt said Traynor prostituted Lovelace, forcing her to make adult films.

“That type of coercion did exist,” he said. “I think she was being very much controlled by Chuck (Traynor). … That’s why I refer to him as a pimp.”

——————–

Has anyone seen the “Lovelace” movie yet? If so, what did you think of it? Would you recommend it to others?

“LOOK: Raunchy ‘Oral Skills’ Billboard Near College Campus” (RECRUITING YOUNG WOMEN FOR PROSTITUTION)

There are now BILLBOARDS in Los Angeles with ex porn star @BreeOlson recruiting young women for sugar daddy prostitution! WOW. We think it’s very sad that pornstitution culture has spread so much into our society that this is happening! What do YOU think?

Details below…

[Huffington Post] — A new raunchy billboard near the UCLA campus features a former porn star beckoning students to be paid for oral sex.

The billboard was put up by ArrangementFinders(dot)com, a “sugardaddy dating site,” and stars former adult performer Bree Olson (she also used to date Charlie Sheen). Olson smiles next to the message, “Do you have good oral skills? We’ve got a job for you.”

The billboard is at the corner of Pico Blvd. and Gateway Blvd.

The site’s chief marketing office AJ Perkins said in a statement about the billboard, “After three months of hanging out by the beach and taking it easy, we want to remind female students they have other options in life besides just hard work.”
