This summer, Wheelock College, together with Stop Porn Culture, is offering a Media Institute, an anti-pornography training, and a one-day feminist teach-in. Below are details and a link to registration. You can register for any or all of the events. Scholarships are available for low income people.

Event 1 – July 9 – 12

Media Institute:

Media Madness: The Impact of Sex, Violence and Commercial Culture on Children, Adults and Society

Faculty: Dr. Gail Dines and Dr. Diane Levin

* How to critically deconstruct media images and develop media literacy skills

* How to become active in advocacy, community building, and grass roots organizing

* How to work with children, families, schools, and the wider society to counteract the harm being caused

Stop Porn Culture Anti-Pornography Activist Training

Trainers: SPC Board

Running concurrently with the second half of the media institute is a training that provides participants with the experience, knowledge, and confidence to talk publicly against pornography in their communities. The training will include in-depth presentations on:

· How porn shapes our attitudes, identities, behaviors and sexuality

· Background on the economics of this global industry

· First Amendment and other free speech issues

· Women in the industry

· Racism in porn

· The question of “alternative” images

· How to organize in your community

We will also have a long session of practicing Q&As in small groups. The training will end with a session on self-care for presenters and activists, since this work can be grueling.

Feminist Teach-In

Facilitators: SPC board and members

This feminist teach-in will provide participants with an opportunity to participate in in-depth discussions with leading feminist activists/academics from across the country, and also in small group discussions, to explore issues such as:

* History of debates within feminist thinking and activism

* The porning of women’s and men’s sexuality

* The sexual politics of hook-up culture

* The history of race and racism in feminism

* Men in feminism

* Stopping prostitution and trafficking

* Capitalism, patriarchy and environmental justice

* Feminist blogging/writing as resistance

. . . AND: how to become a joyful, energized and effective feminist activist!

PORN GENERATION: 40% of teenagers have texted sexually explicit images of themselves

Here’s yet another article that demonstrates how exposure to pornography has VERY severe consequences for kids!

[Mirror UK] — It is all too easy for parents to dismiss porn as a harmless part of growing up – but gone are the days of teenage boys hiding a copy of a racy magazine under their beds.

Instead the shocking reality of the availability and effect of pornography – particularly explicit and violent online videos – is becoming increasingly worrying.

This week, former children’s TV star Floella Benjamin slammed internet porn, warning that Britain was on an “unstoppable march into a moral wasteland”.

The Lib Dem peer said girls are increasingly subjected to degrading behaviour and boys are learning to see their female counterparts as “sexual objects”.

In just over three years the number of under-18s committing sex crimes has rocketed by almost 40%, with experts largely blaming online porn.

Even primary school kids are exposed to pornography and a shocking 40% of youngsters have used their smartphones to send sexually explicit images of themselves.

The sexting trend has led to devastating consequences – including suicide – and child protection experts warn of an unprecedented generation of children growing up exposed to violent pornography and the warped attitudes it creates.

And our investigation reveals that it is a danger no parent can afford to ignore.

Some schools are trying to tackle the problem with a groundbreaking new scheme to change attitudes.

But joining one such class provides a terrifying snapshot of the attitudes children have today towards sex.

At first there is a nervous silence interrupted only by the odd giggle. But then the words come thick and fast – slag, slut, whore, sket…

The group of teenagers at an inner-city school are discussing insults they encounter regularly.

“You hear that all the time,” says one 16-year-old girl, pulling at her fringe. “I don’t think about what it means but when you do, you realise it’s not that great.”

The TeenBoundaries session run by charity Family Lives is one of five classes, paid for by the school, teaching vital life-lessons about the perils facing 21st century kids – online porn, sexual bullying, cyber bullying and the dangers of sexting.

It is sex education for a modern age. And listening to the stories told by the 21-strong class of 16 and 17-year-olds makes for a sobering experience.

One 16-year-old girl says: “This generation judges a lot. How you dress, what you say, how you act. If someone walks into the common room and they’ve been with a lad, no one will keep quiet about it. It always gets out.”

One 17-year-old boy explains: “Stuff gets spread through Facebook, Twitter and email.

“Once, a girl sent a boy an intimate photo of herself. He blackmailed her and said he wouldn’t send it to anyone if she gave him money.

“She paid up but he sent it round the school. Parents would be shocked to know the stuff we see. They haven’t got a clue.”

The outreach worker leading the session, Shirin Rose Monks, says the combined effect of sexual bullying, sexting, sexual aggression and pornography is “terrifying”.

The 22-year-old explains: “It’s everywhere. There’s no way of stopping kids seeing those images – that is not our job.

“But we can ask them to consider what they’re looking at and teach them that it is not acceptable and not normal.”

And she admits some of the tragic stories she hears still shock her, including a 15-year-old girl who was shunned by her friends after she sent a naked photo of herself to her boyfriend.

She was physically assaulted by her father once he found out and committed suicide in the school toilets.

She says: “The danger of sexting and the abuse of online pornography is that they’re so accessible. Unchecked, the potential effect is terrifying.”

Within the group Shirin has just worked with, most know the damage things such as sexting can do. But what of younger children growing up exposed to images they’re too young to understand?

The Not For Sale Media Project is currently embarking on the creation of posters that raise awareness on issues of prostitution, pornography, and trafficking. THE HARSH TRUTH ABOUT THE HARMS, DANGERS AND NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES OF STRIPPING

I would like to share my experience in the adult industry here so that people might have a better idea of what it is really like to do this type of work, not what the distributors/managers want people to think its like. I’ve been an exotic dancer (read stripper) for several years now. I started dancing soon after getting a job as a cocktail waitress in a strip club. (The old joke about the difference between a waitress and a stripper being 3 months). I thought it would be easier — less days worked, able to drink on the job, no running around with a tray. Given the choice again I would never have started.

You go in thinking it will be lots of quick easy money and realize you’re spending more on outfits, makeup, hair, nails, house fees (most clubs charge the dancers to work there), tip outs (required), club merchandise (required to sell or pay for it yourself — I have a lot of dust rags that say ” _____ CLUB”), and drugs (that you may not need to do your job at first but probably will turn to eventually to dull the emotional pain this path will inevitably bring).

First: the girls will most likely be catty and awful to you because you’re new. They will not help you and may be openly hostile. I’ve had girls burn holes in my clothes while I was giving a dance, trip me, break glass on my stage, and even slip various things into my drinks (including acid – no fun).

It takes an enormous emotional and physical toll on you. It’s exhausting (especially at clubs where pole work is encouraged), the shoes mess your feet up, your knees crack every time you kneel down on stage to get a tip, I’ve thrown my back out twice. I’ve worked at clubs with old chipped stages that scratched you up when you rolled around on them and poles that were flaking big chunks of sharp, rusty metal into your skin. (Hope you got your tetanus shot.) You will break out from all the filth on everything. (NOTHING IS EVER CLEANED, EVER.) You get zits between your boobs from rubbing them on greasy guys’ stubble covered faces all night, you get chafed from grinding (starched jeans and huge belt buckles – OUCH!).

You get staph infections from the nasty chairs that have been puked on god only knows how many times. If you work where you always wear panties you get yeast infections from sweating in what amounts to bathing suit bottoms all night. If you work full nude you are exposed to far worse. (Do you know what that nasty girl has? I hope so, cause you just sat your bare coochie on the same chair/lap/stage that she did five minutes before.) Guys will come in their pants and you may not realize it till it has soaked through your t-back. (Do you know what he has? You may have it now too…)

The customers are awful. They will scream obscenities at you, ask you to do awful things (especially if you also do web cam work, which is like being on a pornographic lazy Susan for hours – “show your ass, show your tits, open your mouth, take your shoes off, bend over, spread your pussy”, and on and on and on…. I did this for two weeks and couldn’t handle it anymore. Imagine using your dildo vigorously and in strange positions for 4-6 hours straight).

Female customers will treat you like shit and call you fat, even if they look like Shamu. Many customers are extremely abusive — I’ve been slapped, choked, bitten, burned with cigarettes, spit on, puked on, my hair pulled, clothes ripped, things thrown at me. Many managers turn a blind eye to these abuses, as they do to the use of illicit drugs and prostitution. (Can you say VIP room?)

Managers are abusive, corrupt, or just plain incompetent. I was raped by a customer when I was black out drunk and the manager let him “take me home safely” and I woke up naked and bleeding in a strange house. Many other girls have been raped inside and outside the club, many times more than once, especially in badly monitored VIP rooms, but few report this because cops will just say that we were turning tricks and are just crying because we didn’t get the money we wanted.

In some cases managers will take pictures of drunk girls with them (and yes, I mean that in the worst sense) and use it to blackmail them into doing whatever they want. You will have customers follow you home almost every night (most of have learned to carry something a lot stronger that pepper spray). I’ve had some weirdo knock on my door at 3 a.m. as a “surprise” more than once. (But only once was said weirdo bearing flowers. Can you say delusional and desperate?)

Speaking of delusional and depressing there is the strange breed of the strip club addict who is often lonely and clingy (and not entirely stable). Many of these men are married or have children but spend far more time/effort (buying diamonds, spending hours at the club), devoted to women who take all their money and would at the same time happily take a cheese grater to their face. (Yes, we hate all the customers — ALL of them).

I’ve seen men run through years of savings and run up huge credit card debts trying to win over the girl they are obsessed with only to learn that they will never get anything more than a lap dance out of the relationship. (The last one pretty much paid for my house). This can obviously destroy families along with the men stupid enough to do this. And, yes there are sugar-daddy arrangements that go on but they NEVER end well.

No matter how many times a night you’re told that you’re hot/beautiful/have nice tits this job trashes your self-esteem. You’re always wondering “if my boobs were bigger/if I’d worn a different lipstick/if I was thinner would I have made more tonight?” Consequently I’ve seen some really badly botched boob jobs (think cross-eyed). Eating disorders are rampant. (I’ve seen girls pass toothbrushes over the sad half-wall stalls in the bathroom in order to make themselves throw up.) Most girls do drugs of some kind. (You always wonder if a girl started stripping to support her habit — it’s the only job most addicts can hold down — or if, like me, she started taking drugs in order to be able to go in to work and face the customers.)

Many girls are also supporting abusive boyfriends/pimps that they just cant seem to get away from. (I’ve seen more than one girl’s “boyfriend” wait for her outside the club to take her money as soon as she gets off and maybe knock her around a bit if its not enough — although the girl who had enough and pulled out a taser on the jerk who had been abusing her for months was priceless to watch. He cried.

If you’re lucky enough to avoid the pimp Jr.s you have a hell of a time finding and keeping a real relationship. Most good guys will drop you the instant they find out what you do and if by some miracle they don’t, believe me they will get tired of it soon enough. They will get jealous of your money, or think you’re cheating, or insist that you stop because they see the toll it takes on you. (Read: you WILL NOT want to have sex after work. Maybe curl up with a teddy bear and cry, but not screw around.)

Oh yes, let’s not leave out the fact that you will be ostracized FOREVER for this job. People don’t understand (or they understand all too well) what we really do and go through. When you go to get a real job there is that big gap on your job history with the ambiguous label of “independent contractor.” What kind of contractor? Can you verify that lie, dear?

Well, I hope this has enlightened any readers to the real stripper lifestyle. Not all the glitz and glamour it’s cracked up to be, is it?

The Not For Sale Media Project is a mobilization of feminist media makers and grassroots activists that are creatively challenging the mass media’s normalization of prostitution, pornography, and other forms of sexual abuse through the creation and distribution of alternative media. We are creating alternative forms of media that encourage individuals and communities to think more critically about the buying and selling of women’s bodies; the commodification of sex and sexuality; impacts on individuals and groups of people; and alternative visions of sex and sexuality free of power abuse, violence, and hierarchy.

The Not For Sale Media Project is currently embarking on the creation of posters that raise awareness on issues of prostitution, pornography, and trafficking. The posters are 8.5″ x 14″ or 11″ x 17″ in size and are being utilized for public and community education. View some of the posters below. We encourage you to download, print, and circulate them in your own community.

The only requirement is that you have a commitment to raising public awareness about the harms of prostitution, pornography, and trafficking. “The Day My 11-Year-Old Son Found Violent Porn on the Web” (With advice to parents on how to handle children’s exposure to porn)

Here’s a story below on the sad reality of what millions of children and their parents are dealing with in regards to pornography — all around the world… So tragic…

NOTE: Needless to say we disagree with this part here: “We also talk about how sometimes women choose to go into the sex industry and that when the work is on their terms, that’s OK.” We disagree with this because porn is still usually harmful to the participants, even if they chose it, and it is still usually harmful to the viewers, their partners, and children exposed to it, not to mention that it fuels rape, other forms of sexual abuse and sex trafficking.

But other than that the article has some good insights and is worth reading, especially by parents. So please check it out and share it with the parents you know!

[The Independent - UK] — Last week my son told me he had watched something horrible online. Something sexual where the young women involved seemed coerced into an act that was brutal and disgusting, not just to an uninitiated 11-year-old, prone to anxiety, but to anyone with a shred of humanity. Something that was instantly viewable at the touch of a smartphone button. Something I now know many have already seen.

He watched it because one of his new friends told him he should – because it was “funny”. He is finding it hard to make friends at his new secondary school and wanted to fit in. He didn’t know what he was going to see.

I know this because, from that particular day, I noticed my son becoming withdrawn. He seemed sullen and easily upset. I knew something was wrong and asked several times if he was OK. Clearly he wasn’t.

During a family walk a few days later, we talked about school, how his life was changing and how he and his best friend had grown apart. Then, that evening, as I was bidding him and his brother goodnight, he said he needed to talk. So we went into my bedroom and he told me everything. He said he had been horrified watching a short video online but was unable to stop thinking about it. He told me he couldn’t “unsee” it, and how he felt his childhood was effectively over. He had not told me anything as he thought I’d be angry with him.

So I’m left cuddling my son, who is strung between childhood and adolescence. He tells me that everything is moving too fast. We talk about his observation that you can’t “unsee” stuff. We talk about how you can’t go backwards. And we talk about the importance of moving forward. I tell him how he needs to grow older so that the world can have a great man in their midst.

Then we talk about the porn industry and how often it portrays women as passive beings. We talk about how women in the video he saw are real people, forced into very unpleasant situations – perhaps mums and sisters, certainly daughters – and we talk about how very far from “funny” videos like these really are. We also talk about how sometimes women choose to go into the sex industry and that when the work is on their terms, that’s OK.

We talk about why people might access porn. That being curious is completely natural. We talk about the difference between what he watched that was brutal and violent and something that the majority of people might find titillating.

I am looking at this through the eyes of my 11-year-old. He can see that there are gradations of porn. Some of it, though an unrealistic view of sex between two consenting adults, is bearable and allows you to retain a basic positive belief in the world. But then there is the degrading, shockingly violent porn that showed him a dark underbelly of an online world that until that moment was largely populated by Minecraft and Harry Potter. Faced with this hideous new information, he simply doesn’t know where to file it.

►60% of prostituted women suffered physical assaults;
►70% experienced verbal threats of physical assault;
►40% experienced sexual violence;
►and 40% had been forced into prostitution or sexual abuse by acquaintances.

Legalization of prostitution does not make women any safer or free. Women need access to real social change that will improve the social, economic, and political quality and status of their lives, not for the sexual use and abuse of them to be permitted and legalized. Alternatives to legalization exist! In 1999, the Swedish Parliament put into effect a law which criminalizes the buying of sexual services but not the selling of sexual services. This is a compassionate, social interventionist legal response to the cruelty and violence of prostitution.”

R4SCUACHE’S PORN ADDICTION STORY: “Porn Is the Reason 45 Year-Old Lonely Men Become 45 Year-Old Lonely Men”

Here’s a very sad but profound story about the severe harms of pornography use: isolation, no social skills, no real life, love, or relationships… But the GOOD NEWS is that even if it takes awhile, some porn users CAN see the light, and begin to live REAL lives, and learn the skills needed to enter into REAL relationships with REAL-LIFE partners.

For those of you who know people who use porn who think it’s just harmless fun, especially young guys, please feel free to share the below story with them to help them wake up sooner rather than later!

R4SCUACHE’S PORN ADDICTION STORY

I must admit that for most of my adult life I have watched porn constantly, and I haven’t realized until recently all of the damage that it has done to me emotionally and mentally.

Pornography isolates you from the real world and turns you into a sex starved person. Pornography is exactly like drugs — it’s an addiction that will eventually ruin your life. I have a hard time developing real and strong relationships with women, and it’s because I was so dependent on porn when I was lonely, and got addicted it. So now I have absolutely no social skills whatsoever. I have a hard time talking to women.

The truth is, most women are not like those porn stars we see in films, and they don’t want to be treated like porn stars get treated on film. Porn stars get paid for what they do, that’s why they do it. Real women are way way different than those depicted in porn films.

One final thought: I think porn is the reason 45 year-old lonely men become 45 year-old lonely men. They’re too dependent on porn for temporary relief of depression, but emotionally they receive nothing positive from it. Because of porn they live their whole lives alone and depressed. They learn no social skills and think that we live in a world where all that women want is sex, or to be treated like they do in films, so that becomes their mentality.

Different types of people watch porn, but I think that those that get affected the most are the ones that have never had a real relationship with a woman. I think we should teach kids more about being in relationships based on love and respect, and encourage them to seek love, so that one day we don’t have to fill the voids with porn.

Former porn star and CSUN student Jennie Ketcham shares her story

Here’s an article with ex-porn star Jennie Ketcham sharing the harsh truth of the porn industry. (Jennie is @BecomingJennie at Twitter.)

We love Jennie because she really knows what she’s talking about and she always just tells it like it is! And on top of that she’s a wonderful person who is setting a great example of someone who has left porn and who has made a positive transition to a healthier life. Go Jennie!

[Sundial] — Jennie Ketcham, former porn star and current CSUN psychology major, dispelled myths about the porn industry providing actors an endlessly glamorous lifestyle during the lecture “Porn’s Glass Ceiling: An Illusionary Wage Gap,” in the USU Tuesday.

After a lucrative eight year run as an award-winning porn actress, Kecham gave up drugs and alcohol and realized she could not continue the job while sober.

“I thought it would validate me, so I did nude modeling, the gateway drug to hard core porn. I didn’t realize that validation can come from inside,” said Ketcham, author of “I Am Jennie.” “Nothing about what I did gave me skills to live in the real world.”

Ketcham said “average females” are porn stars that are not in high demand. They are very easily replaceable and their careers often do not last longer than a year. She estimated that they can make about $88,000 a year doing two scenes a week or 162 a year. The “average male,” whose careers have more longevity at an average of five years, can make comparable income but must perform about four scenes a week.

“Exceptional females,” or those in very high demand, can make their careers last closer to 10 years at $249,600 a year, doing about four a week or 192 a year. “Exceptional males,” who can make their careers last the longest at 15 years, will make slightly more, about $268,800 a year, but have to perform almost every day at about 336 scenes a year.

Exact numbers are hard to find because of how closed off the industry tries to be, but estimates were based off figures she came across when working as a director, she said.

“Porn is the greatest myth of the entertainment business because no one knows about it,” Ketcham said. “I knew if I spoke out I would be blacklisted and it would take away that temptation, I couldn’t go back – it’s like erasing your drug dealer’s phone number.”

At high rates and a fast turn around, Ketcham said the glass ceiling for the porn industry is that performers have to give up more to make more, all together making it an unsustainable career.

“I have a friend that has been in the business for seven years and just did her first anal scene for $10,000,” Ketcham said.

“Tomorrow it will go back to the regular rate of $1,300 and now that people expect it, they want you to do it now.”

Whatever reasons people have for getting into the industry, decisions start with the discrepancy between who they really are and who they ideally want to be, Ketcham said. “When I was young I didn’t know where I fit in. I didn’t know my role in family or my family’s role in society (and) I felt muddled and confused,” she said.

[Metro World News] — Jared Watkins, a 23-year-old in Washington, DC, doesn’t have any illusions about men’s sexuality: “Most men my age watch porn. We’re the first generation that grew up with porn so easily available to us. Pornography is starting to get more violent, and we feel disgusted with ourselves for watching it, but many of us are confused about their disgust, because they think this is what real sex is like.”

Indeed, today’s boys watch porn growing up – and a lot of it. According to new surveys, the average boy now starts viewing porn at age 11 – even boys as young as seven now watch it. What they see is often hardcore.

“Sexual curiosity is healthy, but we’re raising our boys on violent porn,” says Carleton Hendrick, a Harvard-educated psychotherapist in Massachusetts who has treated hundreds of teenagers. “Thanks to the internet, porn is now boys’ primary sex educator. They watch it on their computers, on their phones, their tablets and their friends’ computers. With the average viewing time per week being two hours, it means they see thousands of images that tell them that cruel, violent sexual acts against girls are permissible, even desired by girls. It’s having staggering consequences on our boys, and by implication on our girls.”

Todd Spaulding, clinical director at the Oxbow Academy in rural Utah, treats such boys. “Ten boys can look at porn, and you can’t predict whether they’ll become abusers,” he explains. “But the reality is that they can watch anything online, including sadistic and cruel sex. This sex is objectification and dehumanization of girls. Their attitude becomes, ‘You’re an object and therefore I can do whatever I want to you’.”

Oxbow treats 40 boys at the time in its residential program; it’s not even a drop in the bucket, as Spaulding acknowledges. That’s where Neil Irvin comes in. As executive director of the group Men Can Stop Rape, Irvin teaches young boys across the United States – and now abroad – about healthy sexuality.

“I’m a math and history teacher by training,” he says. “Teaching sexuality is as important! We show boys what can happen to them if they use drugs or pornography. We help them understand healthy sexuality and give them male role models they can talk to when they meet a girl they’re attracted to.”

Without programs like Irvin’s, do we risk raising sexual predators, and women willing to accept violence? Candida Royalle, a pioneer of the feminist ‘by-and-for-women’ porn genre, believes the risk is exaggerated: “While some standard porn can be described as sexist and at times degrading, it’s not particularly violent. And while it may model sexual behavior that’s not sensitive to what women want, for the most part it’s not promoting violence.”

But, observes Hendrick, girls are growing up with the idea that they have to subject themselves to boys’ porn-style desires: “Many girls even go on porn sites to see what boys really want, even though it hurts. Girls are outperforming boys academically and succeeding at every other level, but in order to please boys they sexually degrade themselves.”

Boys and sex: Preventing rape

Two million boys have attended Men Can Stop Rape’s school program, the Men of Strength club (MOST). “We send 100 selected boys invitations saying, ‘You’ve been nominated as a leader of your school’,” explains Neil Irvin. “Then the boys are invited to a meeting with pizza and a cool movie.” MOST’s leaders then tell them that not everyone will be invited to join. “That makes them want to be selected,” explains Irvin. “The members get special access to things. That makes the program cool.”

Keep red flags down: How to prevent your son from developing an unhealthy porn habit:

1. Talk with your child about sex very early. Teach him about good touching, bad touching, secret touching.

2. Set boundaries. The more internet access you give your kids, the more they’ll access harmful content.

3. If he exceeds his internet privileges, confiscate his computer or iPad. Don’t try to be his friend, even if being strict results in his saying he’ll punch a hole in the wall.

4. If your son watches porn, talk about it. Don’t vilify his attraction to girls, or even to other boys, but explain that it’s not healthy to keep viewing such websites. It will be an uncomfortable conversation, but it has to be!

5. If your son develops a pornography habit, ask why he feels excited about porn. Don’t take “I don’t know” for an answer. Explain that sexual attraction is a good thing, and why you don’t want him to get it through watching porn.
