DEMAND for Child Sex Trafficking in the U.S. – Johns must be held accountable for their crimes

Here’s a great article on DEMAND by JOHNS for child sex trafficking (that is fueled by PORN), and why it must be the focus in stopping sex trafficking.

[Huff Post - Excerpt] — Tami was kidnapped by a pimp, while walking home from school. He kept her captive for six months, raping, beating, and starving her. And selling her for sex with men every night. Tami thought she could escape her hell by telling the “Johns” that she was only a kid. And so every night, for six months, Tami told the men who purchased her, “I’m only 15. Can you please take me to a police station?” But not one buyer did. According to Tami, they ignored her pleas, forced her to perform sexual acts, and then returned her to the pimp because they had already “paid for her.”

And then there was the story of the girl who was burned to death. She had tried to run away from the control of her pimp/trafficker. To make an example of any girl who dares to escape, the pimp burned her alive on “the track” in front of the other girls under his control.

The girls said that as long as “Johns” could buy 14- and 15-year-olds without fear or consequence, more girls would be coerced into exploitation and trafficking — and tortured if they tried to escape.

A young man searched for ‘granny porn’ for 4 hours, then stabbed to death his step-grandmother

Here is a VERY disturbing story about a young man who spent four hours surfing for hardcore “granny” porn, then murdered his grandmother right afterwards! But porn doesn’t REALLY affect the viewers and their attitudes and behavior, right?? It’s just “harmless ‘adult’ entertainment,” right? We’ll let you be the judge…

[Mirror UK] — A ‘troubled’ young man knifed his step-grandmother to death in a sexually-motivated killing after an internet surfing session for ‘granny porn’.

Jack Huxley, 20, armed himself with kitchen knives and a carving fork to stab vulnerable pensioner Janis Dundas as she slept, leaving three blades protruding from her battered body before he fled.

The 62-year-old had given her wayward stepson a bed for the night after he turned up on her doorstep, apparently homeless.

But after a late-night session on her computer searching the web for ‘sexual activity between young men and mature women’, Huxley subjected his elderly relative to a brutal attack, leaving behind up to 28 knife wounds.

Ms Dundas bloodied body was found naked on her bed with evidence that her stepson had engaged in ‘sexual activity’ with her, but not intercourse.

Liverpool Crown Court today heard loner Huxley had never had a girlfriend, had a history of self-harm and been bullied regularly during his childhood.

His barrister Charles Miskin QC said: “He was like a wild animal who doesn’t care about anything.”

Checks of Ms Dundas’ computer revealed Huxley, who sat in the dock holding his head in his hands, had scoured the internet for hardcore pornography over a four-hour period leading up to the ferocious attack at her home in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

Among the catalogue of injuries were a nine-inch wound to her neck, severing the larynx, and ‘horrific’ defensive wounds to her hands which left one of her fingers ‘hanging off’, prosecutor Stuart Lawson-Rogers said.

Ms Dundas heavily bloodstained tights had been removed completely while beneath her body was a pair of Huxley’s Calvin Klein boxer shorts.

Today, Huxley pleaded guilty to murder on the first day of his scheduled trial, but Judge Clement Goldstone suspended sentence until tomorrow.

A neighbour told police how she watched a young man drive away from the scene, on April 5, in Mrs Dundas Peugoet car, momentarily crashing into a wall.

“MEET THE GIRLS WHO ARE BORN TO BE PROSTITUTES” (Toronto Star) — Average recruitment age has dropped to 9-12 years old

[Toronto Star] — Like many Indian girls, Suchitra was taught her future profession by her mother. In her village, there was only one path. Even before she’d reached puberty, Suchitra had learned different sexual positions and other ways to please a customer.

At age 14, a man she had never seen before showed up one day at the family’s house near Bharatpur in northern India. At her mother’s urging, Suchitra got into his car. Six hours later they reached their destination. It was a brothel in New Delhi’s red-light district. She had been sent into sexual servitude.

“I always knew that this would be my life,” says Suchitra, sitting in her wardrobe-sized room and wearing a low-cut green top and jeans, her hair pulled back in a tight bun. “I can never forget what I’ve done but it is the only way for my family to earn a living.”

Suchitra, now 20, is from one of hundreds of villages in India where centuries-old tradition dictates that most girls enter into a life of prostitution. Rising wealth hasn’t reduced the trafficking of girls for sex in the world’s second-most populous nation: the number of child prostitutes is growing and the average recruitment age has dropped to between 9 and 12 years old, according to the Delhi-based National Human Rights Commission.

“We are witnessing an unprecedented growth in prostitution,” says K.K. Mukherjee, a sociologist who has studied sex workers for more than three decades and has written government reports on the subject. “It is being driven by rising levels of income but also by a change in sexual attitudes and the increasing migration of women to cities.”

Districts such as Bharatpur, where half of the women are illiterate, are breeding grounds for the country’s $4-billion sex trafficking industry. India has 3 million sex workers, of whom 1.2 million are below the age of 18, according to a government estimate. The South Asian nation traffics more women for sex than any other country.

The growth of underage prostitution in a country where the gross domestic product has risen on average about 8 per cent annually in the past decade is testimony to the treatment of women and the power of caste in the world’s biggest democracy. India, which carries out almost 40 per cent of the world’s female sterilizations, where a woman is raped on average every 21 minutes and where a third of all women are illiterate, is failing to change views that undercut the status of women.

Whole families from some castes at the bottom rungs of India’s social hierarchy rely on income from their daughters’ sex work, with fathers and brothers often acting as pimps. The girls often have their virginity auctioned to the highest bidder once they reach puberty.

Suchitra, who is of the Bedia caste, shows how the caste-based system determines access to occupations and social status. Rooted in religion, the millennia-old structure marginalizes certain groups, imprisoning women in a cycle of isolation and abuse. Many female members of the Bedia community, which numbers about 20,000, say they are treated like outcasts. They can’t marry if they have worked as a prostitute, are refused service in shops, are called “whores” and are greeted with disinterest by police when one of them is raped.

“Caste remains a defining feature for most Indians,” says Satish Misra, a political analyst at the Observer Research Foundation, a policy group based in New Delhi. “These attitudes bring an enormous cost in terms of a lack of social mobility and lost economic opportunities.”

CASTE-BASED PREJUDICE

A single bare bulb exudes dim light in Suchitra’s room, just enough to see the black water stains on the peeling, faded pastel-green walls. Used condoms lie on the floor. The stench of urine, sweat and cheap perfume hangs in the air. Rats gnaw at piles of garbage in the corridors outside.

Suchitra, who would only give her first name for fear of arrest by the police, says she has sex with as many as a dozen men a day for as little as 100 rupees ($1.65) a time. A concrete slab that takes up most of her room serves as a bed, where she sleeps and does her work. Customers have threatened her with knives, guns and beer bottles, she says.

“America’s porn prof injures woman in car crash, wants to go to jail” (via Daily Caller)

Infamous “Porn Professor” Hugo Schwyzer sadly continues to harm others while he spirals further out of control! While Hugo certainly seems to be receiving a great deal of well-deserved karmic payback for his transgressions of infidelity, promoting porn, severe lack of professionalism, and taking advantage of young female students, his ever increasing number of victims shouldn’t also have to be sucked into his vortex of self-destruction! ~ See disturbing details below…

[Daily Caller] — Discredited American pornography scholar Hugo Schwyzer continued his unbelievable descent into public infamy after crashing his car while under the influence of prescription medication, seriously injuring another driver.

The woman he hit was airlifted from the crash site, and Schwyzer was arrested. He was held for six hours and released on a $100,000 bond.

Schwyzer admitted his responsibility in an exclusive interview with The Daily Caller.

“I’m praying for the health and recovery of the woman I injured in the accident,” he said.

Schwyzer had prescriptions for the medications he was taking, but had exceeded the recommended dosage, he said.

Schwyzer’s mother has hired a lawyer to help with his case, but the professor said that the idea of going to jail for a few years had a comforting allure.

“[Jail is] a safe place for me, given how much of a threat I am to myself on the outside,” he said.

Regardless of what happens, Schwyzer is finished at Pasadena City College, where he has been a professor for over 20 years and taught a course called “Navigating Pornography” as recently as this summer. The course earned media scrutiny after Schwyzer invited porn actor James Deen to address his students.

Schwyzer eventually admitted to cheating on his wife and sleeping with his students. He attempted suicide multiple times, and has been in and out of the hospital.

“I am single-handedly redefining what rock bottom means every week,” he said.

He expects that his lawyer will soon cut him off from speaking to media outlets.

Ex Porn Performer on Condoms: “We are Human Beings that Deserve Respect” (Via AIDS Healthcare Foundation)

A former porn performer has shared an anonymous letter that exposes how callously the industry abuses the health and safety of their performers. Check out the disturbing details below, which explains why this one female performer left porn, and why she now advocates for mandatory condom use!

[AIDS HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION] — LOS ANGELES (October 3, 2013) On the heels of widespread news reports of several recent HIV infections found in several adult film performers working in the porn industry, a former adult performer wrote an eloquent ‘To Whom It May Concern’ letter via AHF in which the performer eloquently urges her former adult film colleagues and producers to comply with all condom use and worker safety laws and regulations. The letter, dated September 19, 2013, was sent to the community via AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s (AHF) Headquarters in Hollywood. Below is the text:

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I have been following the HIV crisis in the porn industry for some time now, mainly due to the fact I was a performer in the adult industry from 2011 to 2012. While I was never directly spoken down to or disrespected, there were many aspects of the adult industry that I experienced to be corrupt in my short time as a performer that caused me to stop filming any scenes in the industry.

Please do not release my name, address or any other personal information as I have a few dear friends who work in the industry and I do not want them to know I am writing this letter. I also have a family that means a lot more to me than being known for speaking on this matter. I would love to come out publicly to aid in your efforts promoting condoms in the industry, but it would not be in my family’s or my best interest to do so. I hope you understand. I want to do my best to help.

I performed in 5 scenes, both prior and after the passing of Measure B.

I performed in scenes where the director admitted they did not pull proper permits to film. This came up because I was to sign new paperwork regarding measure B and my “rights.” I can say right now there are many shoots going on where permits in LA County are not being filed for. I remember a report a few months ago that stated the number of permits in LA County for adult filming dropped drastically. They are still shooting. That is why this is so important to me. The industry thinks it can self regulate but it cannot. They think they are invisible, when they are really being ignorant and reckless with the health and well being of those who are part of the team who put food on their table and money in their wallets. The talent. Half of the people on set are drunk, under the influence of drugs, or are there with ulterior motives. For instance, to receive oral sex on set. Actually, this is one of the deciding factors on whether you get booked again.

The fact the moratorium is going to be lifted makes me sick and uneasy. I’m sure you are familiar with how many times talent can shoot and because of that, the amount of performers who have been exposed is almost unfathomable.

Singer Sinead O’Connor encourages Miley Cyrus to NOT allow the music business to prostitute her

Well done to Sinead O’Connor, who wrote a very wise, powerful and amazing letter to Miley Cyrus! Sinead’s “Open Letter to Miley”, encouraging her to not prostitute herself (or over-sexualize or pornify herself), is posted on Sinead’s Facebook Page and website, and a couple of excerpts are included below. “I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.” [...]

“Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted.. its so not cool Miley.. its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. we aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers.. that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career.”

“Girls Like Us: CHOICE – Young Women in the Sex Industry” | Fair Observer°

The question of choice impacts the way that domestically trafficked girls are viewed and treated by our society. Many people believe that girls “choose” this life, and while it is true that most girls are not kidnapped into the sex industry, to frame their actions as choice is at best misleading. It is clear from the experiences of girls, that while they may have acted in response to individual, environmental and societal factors, this may not necessarily be defined as a choice.

Webster’s Dictionary describes the act of choosing as “to select from a number of possible alternatives; decide on and pick out.” Therefore, in order for a choice to be a legitimate construct, you’ve got to believe that: a) you actually have possible alternatives; and b) you’ve also got to have the capacity to weigh these alternatives against one another and decide on the best avenue. Commercially sexually exploited and trafficked girls have neither – their choices are limited by their age, their family, their circumstances and their inability to weigh up one bad situation against another, given their developmental and emotional immaturity. Therefore, the issue of choice has to be framed in three ways: age and age-appropriate responsibility, the type of choice and the context of the choice.

Age Factor

The age factor is perhaps the most obvious reason that discussions around true “choice” are erroneous and unhelpful to the debate. There’s a reason that we have age limits and standards governing the “choices” that children and youth can make, from drinking, to marrying, to driving, to leaving school, and that is because we, as a society, recognize that there’s a difference in child/adolescent and adult development.

There’s also a fairly obvious reason that the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and its reauthorizations in 2003, 2005, and 2008 have all supported a definition of child sex trafficking where children under the age of 18 found in the commercial sex trade are considered to be victims of trafficking without requiring that they experienced “force, fraud, or coercion” to keep them there. For victims of sex trafficking aged 18 and over, the law requires the “force, fraud, or coercion” standard. In defining the crime of sex trafficking, Congress created certain protections for children. It’s taken as a given that children and youth are operating from a different context, especially in light of age of consent laws.

Not only are choices shaped by external limitations decided by age, they’re also dictated by the psychological and emotional limitations that is adolescent development. In hindsight, as adults looking back on our teenage selves, we can recognize our own impulsivity, risk-taking, our need for peer approval, rebellion against our parents, our limited understanding of consequences – in short, all the characteristics that define being a teenager. Very few adults would honestly want to revisit the naïveté, vulnerability, and often flat out ignorance of adolescence. Many parents don’t trust their own 16-year-old to drive their car, pick their own “good enough” friends, or stay home alone for the weekend without hosting a party. Yet, interestingly, I’ve met lots and lots of adults who feel that a 16-year-old is completely mature enough to be considered fully capable and competent of making the choice to be in the sex industry.

Given their age and psychological development, children and youth often make decisions that are not in their best interests, or that perhaps are unsafe. It’s an unwise choice to meet a stranger in person whom you’ve only met on MySpace, not brilliant decision-making to get in someone’s car when you barely know them, nor is it a great idea to run away from home with $6 in your pocket and nowhere to go. Yet none of these “choices” are the same thing as “choosing” to be in the commercial sex industry – even if they end up leading down that path. It can also be an unwise decision to go home with someone you’ve just met, particularly if you’ve been drinking, and yet making that decision in no way means that you “chose” to get raped.

“Governor Jerry Brown Signs Bill Outlawing Revenge Pornography in California”!

GOOD NEWS for a change! “Revenge porn” has just been outlawed in California! Yay anti-porn team!

[Daily Journal] — SACRAMENTO, California — California Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed a bill outlawing so-called revenge pornography and levying possible jail time for people who post naked photos of their exes after bitter breakups.

Senate Bill 255, which takes effect immediately, makes it a misdemeanor to post identifiable nude pictures of someone else online without permission with the intent to cause emotional distress or humiliation. The penalty is up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

“Until now, there was no tool for law enforcement to protect victims,” the bill’s author, Sen. Anthony Cannella, said in a statement. “Too many have had their lives upended because of an action of another that they trusted.”

Cannella, a Republican from Ceres, has said revenge pornography is a growing problem in the age of social media, when photos and videos that were made privately during a relationship can find their way onto hundreds of websites.

Before the criminal law was enacted, California allowed victims to sue their virtual assailants, but that is an expensive and time-consuming option.

Inside the brutal and hopeless world of Mumbai’s trafficked teenage sex slaves – (via The Guardian)

PLEASE READ this very moving report of child sex slavery in India. AND REMEMBER: Pornography fuels these horrific atrocities. So if someone is against brutal and life shattering child sex trafficking, they must also take a stand against pornography!

[The Guardian] — It was pitch black as I stumbled through the labyrinth of the dark corridors of a large brothel house in Kamathipura, Mumbai’s notorious red-light district. I’d been told to hide my camera under my scarf, not to speak and not to make eye contact with anyone. With my hand I felt the filthy walls dripping with condensation from the intense heat.

Eventually, guided by my Indian fixer, I came to a dimly lit door at the end of a corridor. Like a prison guard, an ageing madam came to the front of the brothel and unlocked the large padlock with her set of keys. I was taken into the reception area of the brothel, the space where the customers are taken to select a girl. In the ceiling I could see a small, open trap door. When the madam had disappeared, I climbed up a wooden ladder and pushed through the small gap.

Suddenly I was face to face with a “box cage”. I knew what I was looking at. The prostitutes had told me of the caged rooms and boxes they had been held in for months, even years, when they were first taken and trafficked to the red-light district. The madams would keep the girls like slaves in the cages until they were “broken”, to the extent that they would not try to run away. The girls told me they never knew if it was night or day. They were only taken out to eat or to be given to a customer for sex. For years I had wanted to photograph these cages, to prove that these places actually exist.

I was returning to Kamathipura 11 years after my first visit – ostensibly as an aid worker. In reality I was using the access I got to make a photographic and video record of a world that shouldn’t be allowed to exist. I did a lot of hiding in the back of brothels, trying to chronicle the lives of girls trafficked and tricked into sex slavery. Before 2002, when I first came to India to photograph children born into this vile industry, I knew nothing about trafficking. Those early days of visiting Kamathipura changed my life, and I’ve been unable to let this story go.

I was unable to let go because of girls such as Guddi. I first met Guddi while I was shooting on 14th Lane, in the heart of Kamathipura. I was sheltering from the intense summer heat in the charities clinic when Guddi came rushing through the door. She was distraught and crying after being beaten by one of the gangsters who run the district.
