Season’s Greetings and Happy Porn-Free Holiday Season to All! :-)

20131225-115851.jpg

Best wishes for peace, love and happiness to all of our great supporters and your loved ones! And to all good people everywhere! :-)

P.S. If anyone would like to support the cause by giving our organization a holiday gift, we do accept and are very much in need of tax-deductible donations! We’d like to do a lot more in 2014 to help survivors exit the sex industry, transition successfully to better lives, and then speak out, but this is a very costly endeavor and we can’t do it without your support. So we hope you will consider doing YOUR part to help us to help others! Thanks! :-)

We also are very much in need of another computer or tablet or both, to increase our ability to do work to fight porn and sexual exploitation. So if anyone would like to donate a new or used computing device, please let us know! Thanks! :-)

CANADA STRIKES DOWN ALL PROSTITUTION LAWS AND HAS ONE YEAR TO CREATE NEW LAWS – “The Price of Paid Sex” (via Rabble.ca)

20131223-124630.jpg

Here’s a helpful overview of Canada’s decision on Friday to strike down all prostitution laws, and the responses from various groups:

[Rabble.ca - Excerpt] — Abolitionists advocate the Nordic legal model, which treats all sex-for-sale as sexual assault and penalizes only the customer. They say that, at the very least, the great majority of sex workers are in the trade as an absolute last economic resort, often as a result of deception or coercion. At worst, the sex trade involves human trafficking: buying and selling sex slaves.

The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) intervened in the Bedford case, advocating the Nordic model. They released a statement after the Court’s decision, which says in part, “Aboriginal women are grossly overrepresented in prostitution and among the women who have been murdered in prostitution. It is not helpful to divide women in prostitution into those who ‘choose’ and those who are ‘forced’ into prostitution. In most cases, Aboriginal women are recruited for prostitution as girls and/or feel they have no other option due to poverty and abuse. It is the sex industry that encourages women to view prostitution as their chosen identity.

“With the legalization of prostitution, NWAC fears that Canada will become a key destination country for traffickers and pimps, and there will be a huge increase in the rates of sexual exploitation and sexualized violence among Aboriginal women and girls. NWAC President, Michèle Audette stated that ‘NWAC’s position is that prostitution exploits and increases the inequality of Aboriginal women and girls on the basis of their gender, race, age, disability and poverty.’”

Another way to view the various sides of the argument would be along the spectrum of belief in the free market. Claimant and retired dominatrix Terri-Jean Bedford, who called her business the Bondage Bungalow, was among the minority at the top of the trade, with her own business and staff and a comfortable and fairly discreet clientele. Like geishas, such top-of-chain workers say they provide a personal service that goes far beyond sex.

Abolitionists argue that the usually young women at the bottom of the supply chain tend to face steep social barriers such as racialization, class, and inadequate education. For every cultivated, genteel online escort who enjoys an occasional pleasant date that ends in a sizeable tip, they argue, there are at least a dozen disadvantaged women/men/trans swapping sex for survival. Unlike, say, selling drugs or working in a casino, having sex with someone for money usually involves a certain loss of personal autonomy.

Mind you, a lot of people are going hungry these days, and some are feeling desperate. In a sluggish service- and retail-oriented economy, some would argue that piecework is better than no job at all. Decriminalization advocates talk about co-operative brothels, with workers voting on policies and hiring their own protection. Unfortunately, so far that model doesn’t seem to have succeeded.

Just as with casinos, with brothels, a few players (usually employers) win, and maybe even win big. Most players find the odds are heavily weighted against them, especially those who are already at some disadvantage. “…far too many Indigenous women and girls [have been] placed in harm’s way, denied adequate protection of the law, and marginalized in a way that allows some men to get away with carrying out violent crimes against them….” states the Amnesty International “Stolen Sisters” report on the more than 600 missing Aboriginal women, thought to have been murdered, probably because somebody wanted sex without having to pay for it.

“The reality is sex workers are 60 to 100 times more likely to be assaulted than anyone else,” said Marion Little, executive director of PEERS,” according to and article in the Victoria Times-Colonist. “The non-profit group provides advocacy and outreach for Victoria sex workers,” and helped organize Victoria’s Red Umbrella Day, the international day to end violence against sex workers.

“It’s a sad day that we’ve now had confirmed that it’s OK to buy and sell women and girls in this country. I think generations to come — our daughters, their granddaughters and on — will look back and say, ‘What were they thinking?,’” Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies Kim Pate told the CBC. “To say that [prostitution] is a choice when you’re talking about the women we work with is to say that in fact it’s OK to just exploit them,” she said.

PLEASE HELP TO CREATE A BETTER AND SAFER WORLD FOR EVERYONE BY MAKING A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION

20131220-164407.jpg

Will you help us to fight the devastating harms of pornography by DONATING? We need your support to do more in 2014! :-)

Like all nonprofits, the more we are supported by good caring people like YOU, the more we can do to make a difference and help others, such as helping survivors of the sex trade to transition and speak out, which we did a lot of this year.

This is a TEAM EFFORT, so if we are going to be able to make progress in this cause, each and every one of us must do our part, whether that is volunteering, doing an independent project, or donating.

Whatever it is, please step up and help! We CAN make progress — IF we ALL take responsibility and really contribute significantly in one way or another. :-)

To all those who do step up and do your part, and to all supporters, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts! You are needed and appreciated! :-)

How porn is destroying modern sex lives: Feminist writer Naomi Wolf has an unsettling explanation…

20131214-140717.jpg

Excellent article by Naomi Wolf (@NaomiRWolf) on how excessive porn use is ruining people’s sex lives ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Are we ‘sexually liberated’ if porn is taking over our thought processes and corroding our ability to sustain meaningful relationships? I think we are less sexually free.

A powerful industry is manipulating us – and ruthlessly exploiting some hard-wiring in the male brain – to turn us more and more into sexual and emotional robots, only capable of achieving sexual fullfilment in a room with a computer, alone.”

Naomi Wolf – On The Dangers Of Porn Addiction and The ‘Kink Spiral’ – “Men Raised On Porn Have Lost Sexual Skills”

20131213-153757.jpg

Check out the video at the link of Naomi Wolf talking about the harms of porn addiction! (@NaomiRWolf)

– “Wolf and Redd also discussed what has been termed the “kink spiral” — the way the ubiquity of pornographic images can lead those looking at them to quickly become desensitized and unsatisfied with what they are viewing. “What turned you on a month ago isn’t arousing anymore so you need more and more extreme images,” Wolf said. “An ordinary woman in your bed can’t duplicate that novelty effect of clicking through multiple images.”"

“BUT WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING HERE?” – An ex-customer of prostitutes becomes an abolitionist

20131211-144430.jpg

Here’s a powerful article about the very harsh reality of prostitution, written by a former john who ultimately became an abolitionist — speaking out on behalf of the Nordic Model.

The Nordic Model, also known as the Swedish Model, penalizes sex buyers to reduce DEMAND, and helps women in prostitution who want to leave to do so.

Note: This article was originally written and published in French, and was kindly translated by our very helpful volunteer Maya S. :-)

——————–

INTRODUCTION:

[LE PLUS] — A law that seeks to combat prostitution in France has passed in the National Assembly with 268 votes in favor versus 138 votes opposing. If it also passes through the Senate by next June, the customers will be penalized. Jean-Marie Blanchard, who used to visit prostitutes, considers this necessary.

~~~~~~~~~~~
“BUT WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING HERE?”
- An ex-customer of prostitutes becomes an abolitionist
Article by Jean-Marie Blanchard
I began visiting prostitutes around the age of 22. A rather unusual start, since most clients are married men with children. I didn’t try to seduce any of the women I saw as I was focused on my own suffering, for which I wanted to make up. And so I had my first sexual experience by visiting a prostitute.
I went once or twice a week in Paris, on Saint-Denis street. It lasted a month. During our first encounters, we would settle for around 50 euros (about $75), and then some of them would lower it to 30 euros (about $45) without my asking anything.
When I saw these degraded prices, I realized that they were being pimped and exploited and I stopped right away. Most of them were from Nigeria and could only speak English. At any rate, there was no way to talk to them – the need to go through as many clients as possible made it impossible to have any interaction that wasn’t strictly sexual.
PIMPED ESCORTS ARE NOT UNCOMMON
So I looked for prostitutes on the Internet, thinking that what I was doing was harmless and that these women were liberated and liked having sex with strangers. The kind of nonsense that clients tell themselves to feel better about what they’re doing. But I quickly started noticing that the reality is a lot less rosy.
While we were handling the money, some of the women would tell me about their lives. Their childhoods and other factors had funneled them into prostitution.
Pimped escorts are not rare. South American women, for example, would often use a so-called “mutual-aid” program to rent rooms from other South American immigrants and pocket a commission. The news articles that I was reading at the time made that absolutely clear.
Not getting past my own ego, I couldn’t help but come back time and time again. I was never satisfied, but having no romantic relationship in my life, I told myself that it was still better than being alone – a solitude that was the result of my own lack of openness to other people. My failed attempts to seduce other women made me hate all women, and I ignored any and all advice about how to make myself more attractive.
I FELT LIKE I WAS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE SITUATION
Escorts often made it clear to me that they weren’t doing this because they wanted to. I felt like I was taking advantage of the situation, a composer in an orchestrated disaster. Even in GFEs, the so-called “girlfriend experience”, where they would feign interest and affection, I was no longer convinced that prostitution was harmless.
I told myself that it was time to put an end to it, and that I deserved something other than this fake sex life. So I first stopped in 2003, six months after starting. I nevertheless gave in twice during the year of 2004, and two times in 2005.
I found myself in bed with a woman who was telling me about her traumatic childhood. Then, she told me something that made it clear that I was the exact opposite of the kind of guy she would like to be with in real life. I thought to myself, “what the hell am I doing here?” And I stopped for good on that day.
From then on, I’ve kept myself away from that world. Echos of it have caught up with me at times, in between whispers here and there from friends. [9] The works of doctor Judith Trinquart and psychiatrist Muriel Salmona have also confirmed what I had been suspecting about prostitution. A lack of genuine love and sexual abuse in childhood weigh heavily into an individual woman’s “choice” to be a prostitute. Except for a minority, prostitution is a harmful practice for most of the women in it.
PENALIZING CLIENTS IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE APPROACH
I became a radical abolitionist about a year and a half ago, upon meeting a woman who became my best friend – an ex-prostitute who used to charge 300 euros (about $450) per hour. Despite her seemingly better working conditions, the experience had heavily traumatized her. After studying the approach taken to prostitution in neighboring countries, we noticed that the best – or at least, least bad – approach is penalizing clients. The attempts to regulate prostitution in Germany and in Catalonia (Spain) have lead to appalling outcomes.
In 2002, I wouldn’t have understand the idea of being punished. I probably would have gone to brothels in neighboring countries, where (prostituted) women work in atrocious conditions. But now, after having befriended prostitutes, and having observed the traumatic consequences of their “work”, I can only support penalizing clients. Our country is still male-dominated. It’s delusional to wait for men to take responsibility and discover empathy towards women.
This law will have an educational value, and it can help rehabilitate women who want to leave the sex industry. As long as they have opportunities to find better-playing work elsewhere.
It is important to make a point about women’s bodies not being commodities. Even if a minority of prostitutes are happy, the majority leave the industry damaged, if not destroyed outright. Needless to say, prostitution is a major public health issue.
My ideal is a gradual end to sex-for-money, where men buy – with money or symbolically – women-as-objects. I am in favor of a sexuality that is based on genuine desire and pleasure, not anachronisms that limit us.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Many thanks to Jean-Marie Blanchard for his brutal honesty and leadership. He is setting a vital example of true compassion and caring towards women and all humanity, for everyone to follow.

Please like and share this article with others. Thanks! :-)

How violent porn site operators disappear behind Internet privacy protections (Via Washington Post)

20131209-165538.jpg

Here is a MUST-READ article on the dark secrets of Internet porn – the porn that is the most violent, misogynist and abusive — and who’s behind it… (And how difficult it can be sometimes to find exactly who that is…)

WARNING!! Very graphic and disturbing content!!

[Washington Post] — Researcher Garth Bruen long has investigated the seamier corners of the Internet, but even he was shocked to discover Rapetube(dot)org, a site urging users to share what it called “fantasy” videos of sexual attacks.

Bruen gradually discovered dozens of similar sites offering disturbing variations — attacks on drunken women, on lesbians, on schoolgirls — to anyone with a credit card. Some made clear that the clips were fictional, but other sites had the word “real” in their titles. At least a few touted videos that he feared might show actual crimes.

Sickened, Bruen tried to determine who operated the sites, a first step toward possibly having them shut down. But he quickly hit a wall: The contact information listed for Web sites increasingly is fictitious or intentionally masked by “privacy protection services” that offer ways around the transparency requirements built into the Internet for decades.

That is especially true for sites offering illicit or controversial content, studies have found. As a result, although governments have increasingly powerful tools for tracking individual behavior on the Internet, it’s harder than ever for private citizens to learn who is responsible for online content, no matter how objectionable.

To Bruen, this is the dark side of Internet privacy.

“That’s not privacy. That’s secrecy,” said Bruen, 42, a security fellow at the Digital Citizens Alliance, a Washington-based advocacy group that combats online crime. “That’s corporate secrecy.”

Porn Industry to Shut Down After Star Turns up HIV+ (L.A. weekly)

20131207-153906.jpg

Yet another HIV case in porn shuts down the industry and proves again how unsafe it is…

[LA Weekly - excerpt ] — A performer has tested positive for HIV and the porn industry’s L.A.-based trade group is calling for an immediate production shutdown as a result. [...]

In a statement sent to the Weekly and other outlets, AHF chief Michael Weinstein had this to say:

“AHF is saddened by the news of yet another adult performer having been infected with HIV. We hope that this person seeks care immediately, and that others were not exposed. Whether this performer was infected in L.A. County or not, this latest news begs the question: how many people need to become infected with HIV for the County of Los Angeles to engage actively in implementing the will of the voters of LA county to protect these performers? How many more performers need to become infected for the industry to comply with existing regulations and laws requiring workplace safety? The willful disregard by the County of Los Angeles and the Industry for the health and welfare of people is becoming more and more apparent. The industry as a whole, and the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health should be ashamed.”

Industry blogger Mike South (NSFW link) says the porn star who tested positive is male.

The news comes after a summer in which a few performers tested positive for the sexually-transmitted disease.

Boy raped sister after watching Internet porn at school – Telegraph (More evidence of porn fueling sexual violence)

20131206-155242.jpg

Please share this with porn users and supporters so they understand how harmful porn is and stop using it. Thanks!

[Telegraph UK] — A boy of 12 raped his younger sister after watching online pornography, prompting a judge to warn on Tuesday that the internet is “not a benign babysitter”.

The boy tried to replicate what he had seen in videos, subjecting the girl, who was under 10, to abuse for more than a year. He was arrested in March and admitted three charges of rape at an earlier hearing.

Before sentencing, Judge Thomas Crowther QC, said: “It’s a sad fact that many boys of his age will have been exposed to adult pornography. But not all boys exposed to it will act as [he] did. He found pornography online and replicated what he saw.

“Let us remind ourselves that the internet is not a benign babysitter but a mirror of adulthood in all its forms.”

The boy would watch the videos in school with another friend then return home and sexually assault his sister.

Georgia Williams murder: man pleads guilty (VIOLENT SEX CRIME FUELED BY HARDCORE PORNOGRAPHY)

20131204-143618.jpg

To those who say porn is harmless, please feel free to share this horrific article with them. Thanks!

WARNING!! VERY GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING CONTENT!

[The Guardian] — A young shop worker obsessed with extreme and violent pornography may spend the rest of his life behind bars after he admitted murdering a 17-year-old girl and taking photographs of her as she died.

Jamie Reynolds lured Georgia Williams, the daughter of a police detective, to his home by asking her to pose for innocent photographs but used a ligature to kill her and took pictures of her final moments before dumping her body in woodland.

When police raided Reynolds’s home in Wellington, Shropshire, they found a collection of the most explicit hardcore pornography including, it is understood, “snuff movies” said to show real people being killed.

Police also found Reynolds, 23, had created dozens of explicit composite images by superimposing the faces of innocent girls from pictures posted on social network sites on to hardcore pornographic material. The images of between 30 and 50 women had been corrupted in this way. In addition, officers found deeply disturbing fantasy stories of a sexual and violent nature written by the killer.

The case is bound to reignite the debate over whether use of hardcore pornography leads to sexual violence…

GOOD NEWS! French lawmakers back ban on buying sex (As part of implementing the “Swedish Model” of prostitution laws)

20131203-133406.jpg

Yay! French lawmakers are just saying NO to johns buying sex from prostituted women! :-) They have voted to move forward a bill that supports the Swedish (or Nordic) Model of prostitution, in which johns are penalized, and women in prostitution are decriminalized and given assistance to leave prostitution if they want to. (Which most do.) This model decreases violence against women and sex trafficking, and increases equality and women’s rights. Yay team! :-)

NOTE: The next vote on the bill by the French government will be tomorrow, December 4, and the bill is expected to pass.

[France 24] — French lawmakers voted early Saturday to adopt a highly controversial provision in a bill that criminalises clients of sex workers.

Under the measure, buying sex will be punishable by a 1,500 euro ($2,000) fine. Repeat offenders risk a fine of 3,750 euros. Alternatively, a course will be proposed to make them aware of the risks involved in the sale of sex.

Dozens rallied both for and against the bill as debate began in the lower house, the National Assembly, which is expected to vote on the sex bill’s other provisions on Wednesday.

Prostitution is allowed in France, but soliciting, pimping and the sale of sex by minors are prohibited.

The government says the bill is aimed at preventing violence against women and protecting the large majority of prostitutes who are victims of trafficking rings.

But critics warn that it would force sex workers further underground and put them in greater danger, and some argue that everyone should be allowed to use their own body as they see fit.

Kicking off the debate, Maud Olivier, one of the lawmakers spearheading the bill, blasted the “hypocrisy” of critics.

“One prostitute declares herself free and the slavery of others becomes respectable and acceptable?” the socialist MP asked parliament.

“How can you find glamorous the 10 to 15 penetrations a day endured by prostitutes for economic reasons with dramatic consequences on their health?”

Women’s Rights Minister and government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem told lawmakers “France is not a country that welcomes prostitution”.

“The question is not sexuality. We are not here to be a moral police… the question is about money that feeds pimping,” she said.

The head of the parliamentary commission created for the bill, Guy Geoffroy, also defended the proposition, saying it “advanced women’s rights”.

“We talk about the satisfaction of male desires but what are we doing about female desires?” asked Geoffroy, who is from the main opposition UMP party.
