Life in Britain’s immigrant brothels revealed in Channel 4 documentary (Premiering MON SEPT 23, 2013, 10 pm)

NEW DOCUMENTARY: An undercover investigation into the mistreatment of immigrants prostituted in the UK’s brothels. Airing on Channel 4 Mon 10 pm. (Likely repeating later and/or being posted online.) Check out the details of this heartbreaking story below, and if you’re in the UK please watch it and share your feedback. Thanks!

[Daily Mail] — A foul-mouthed, tyrannous madam. Work that begins early and doesn’t end until 2am. Clients that that make revolting sexual demands.

This is the reality of life inside one of Britain’s many illegal brothels, laid bare in a groundbreaking new Channel 4 documentary directed by award-winning film maker Nick Broomfield.

In London alone, there are 2,000 brothels, all of which employ immigrant labour – as much as 80 per cent in some cases – and much of it illegal.

As a result, the women who work in them have no rights, live in terror of gangs and are exploited by brothel owners – many of whom not only insist on long hours, but on dangerous sexual behaviour such as going without condoms as well.

Working with Taiwan-born journalist, Hsiao-Hung Pai, Broomfield shines a light into the seedy world of prostitution, introducing us to Chinese brothel owner Mary and her Iranian boyfriend Mustafa.

Together, the pair run an establishment in Finchley, located, ironically enough, above a solicitors and employ an ever-changing cast of women to pander to the requirements of clients.

Like Mary herself, all of the employees, most of whom hail from China, are illegal immigrants.

Many are also hugely in debt to the trafficking gangs who brought them to Britain, including Aisleen, from China, who Hsiao-Hung Pai first meets at another brothel, this time in Stratford.

Aisleen has a 17-year-old son at home and borrowed £20,000 to pay to come to the UK. She originally worked as a DVD seller and in a restaurant but said that it was impossible to continue after the police cracked down.

‘When I started, I didn’t know anything,’ she says. ‘I thought it would be like making love with your husband but it was a sacrifice. Clients tried to have unprotected sex and sometimes I didn’t know they were.

‘Every woman in the trade has the same experience. But after the first week, you learn things. For kissing, never give them the tongue, just the lips.’

It’s an experience that Mita, another prostitute, can identify with. ‘At the beginning, I thought it was normal that everyone does it without a condom,’ she tells Hsiao.
